The Bournemouth University Design society is officially live! Even though we've been meeting for a few months now, we have only recently been awarded our official title.

So, without further adue, I would like to congratulate everyone who made this possible. All the new members, the tirelessly enthusiastic council, and SUBU Societies office, who really got behind the idea of an academic society devoted to design and product engineering. Good work everybody!
We are already steaming ahead, with creativity and good, innovative thinking pouring out of our member's ears. This month we have held and judged our first competition. The brief: Design our society logo and a t-shirt to go with it.
We had a great success with this competition, receiving several dozen individual entries for both the t-shirt and logo. In the end we couldn't pick just one winner and had two joint first places, and three runners up!
First Place went to Dom Cowley -  a second year Product Design Student. We really loved the cleanness of his design and the simplicity  of the single line lightbulb.

In judging this competition, we really felt there were two clear winners, but also felt that there was a strong t-shirt design, and a strong logo design.  So, JOINT first place, for his logo, was given to Daniel Robertson - a first year Graphics Student.

Daniel's logo was professional with strong branding.   And it  was also very different to any other logo associated with the university, which we really liked!
Our runners up were:

Billy Cooke (Product Design, 2nd year) for his Pocket design. We thought it was a fun way to express our collective personality as designers. Also, it offered a lot of variation as individual "tools" could be picked out from the silhouette with a single colour. You can see more of his work here: coroflot.com/billycooke

Josh Long (Product Design, 2nd year) for the sheer hilarity of his ironic t-shirt design that stated "This is not the back." on the front, and "This is the back." on the back. Clever,  minimalist and perfectly executed. Josh's online portfolio is here: coroflot.com/joshlong

and Phoebe Critchley (also Product Design, 2nd year) who offered a stylish and very design oriented shirt that used the full space of the t-shirt (thus ensuring a certain level of t-shirt printing complexity), without crowding or cluttering it.
Thanks again to all who entered. We are already embarking on a journey of exploration and competition with entries to national comps, design exercises, guest speakers, and trips planned for the coming months. The council and I hope to inspire and evangelise creativity, good design and practice, regardless of the challenges that our presented by the limitations of our uni. I'm sure I will rail on about those in another post, but for now VIVA LA SOCIEDAD!
